Books and Beyond
The Books and Beyond program is a school-wide reading incentive program which helps families promote life-long reading in their homes. Families commit to having their children read (or be read to) for a total of 100 minutes a week, or 400 minutes each month. The program runs from November through March. Each month, students are provided with a reading calendar to record the titles and authors of the books they read every day. Students who participate in all five months of the program will be invited to participate in a celebration of their reading success.
Gifted and Talented Program
Ellen Vlachos, G&T Teacher
The Gifted and Talented Program is a district wide program offered to
select students in grades four and five who have met specific entry
criteria. It is housed at Academy Street Elementary School. The program
is designed to enhance the learning experience for these students of
high academic ability by providing a differentiated curriculum exploring
units of study that emphasize creative problem solving involving the
use of fluent, flexible and original thinking skills. The program
fosters leadership and collaboration by having students work both
cooperatively and independently to conduct research and complete
projects to share their information with others. All grade levels
present their work at an open house in the spring.
Peer Leaders
Peer Leaders is an after-school program for fourth and fifth grade students. The focus of the peer leader program is to encourage students to become involved in the school community and to set an excellent example of student leadership for the younger students. The students participate in many fundraising programs throughout the school year. Peer Leaders usually meet the first and third Tuesdays of each month.
Science Quest
Participation in the science fair program is offered to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Experiments utilizing the scientific method are conducted and judged by teachers within the school district. Winning projects go on to compete at Brookhaven National Lab in the spring. This program affords students the opportunity to explore the many different aspects of science.
