Fifth grade students in Ms. Mandracchia’s class at Sylvan Avenue studied the U.S. Constitution leading up to Constitution Day on Sept. 17.

The students utilized their research skills to create a flip book, which highlighted the purpose of the Constitution, as well as its parts, amendments, articles, preamble and the five W’s (who, what, where, when and why). After reading David Catrow’s “We the Kids,” the class collectively translated the preamble to words they could understand and put phrases together like a puzzle. They also constructed a mini-book on the history of the Constitution and read Lynne Cheney’s “We the People” to further their understanding of the meaning and significance of this important historical document.
