The Bayport Blue-Point High School Debate Club attended its second Long Island Forensic Association tournament on Nov. 20, held at Schreiber High School in Port Washington.

The six-member team participated in the tournament using the Lincoln-Douglas or LD format, a one-on-one competitive debate, typically practiced in the United States. The topic of the competition was “Resolved: A just government ought to recognize an unconditional right of workers to strike.”

Each club member had the opportunity to debate four times throughout the day with each side of the debate randomly assigned. The students needed to affirm or negate the resolution.

Taking on large experienced teams from Nassau and Suffolk counties was daunting, but the team gained valuable experience for the next round of debates on the same topic, to be held in December.  The team was led by Lada, Annelise, Stephanie and Christian in the varsity division, who were joined by Liam and Yuvraj in the Novice division. This tournament was the first competition for Stephanie, Christian, Liam and Yuvraj. The Debate Club looks forward to competing on Dec. 18 at the Syosset High School.
