James Wilson Young Middle School students Kailey B. (winner), Dillon B. (first place) and Ava C. (second place) were named winners in the 2021 International Lions Club Peace Poster Contest and were recognized during the Nov. 23 board of education meeting.

The Lions International Peace Poster Contest was created for youth to promote peace, tolerance and international understanding. It encourages children ages 11-13 to think about peace, creatively express what it means to them and share their unique visions with the world.

Sponsored by the Brookhaven Great South Bay Lions Club, the contest was a collaborative effort between the club and the district. Middle school art teachers Samantha Burns and Samantha Raiten worked with librarian and Lions Club member Susan Henke Brinkman to enter students into the contest, who designed posters based on the theme, “We Are All Connected.”

“The imagery produced was very diverse and centered around ideas of nature, love and human connectedness from a global perspective,” Ms. Burns said. “The word ‘human’ was a buzz word, helping us see and portray universal connections.”
