Studying Biodiversity

Studying Biodiversity thumbnail177624

As part of their ecology unit, students in Phillip Turano’s Advanced Placement Environmental Science class at Bayport-Blue Point High School recently participated in a hands-on biodiversity study of a pond. They first watched a video demonstrating ecological sampling techniques and were then provided with real samples from a local pond. According to Turano, in working with these samples, “the students did a phenomenal job cataloguing macro-invertebrate species and calculating the biodiversity of the pond. It was a field trip in the classroom: bringing the outdoors indoors.”
